How do I fix a duplicate Google listing for my funeral home?

By Sean Munn, Founder, Sleepless Director · Updated

Quick answer

Google allows one Business Profile per business, and a profile it treats as a duplicate won't show on Search or Maps. If you created the duplicate, remove it from your Google account. If two listings for your funeral home exist on Maps, request a merge with “Suggest an edit”: Google combines the reviews, though replies can be lost. If someone else owns the listing, request ownership.

Why does a duplicate listing matter?

Google says multiple profiles for the same business may mislead customers and are against its policies, and that a profile considered a duplicate won't show on Search or Maps. For a funeral home, that can mean reviews split across two listings, the wrong phone number reaching families, or the listing you've looked after being the one Google hides.

How do funeral homes end up with duplicates?

What happenedWhat it often leaves behindWhat Google says to do
You moved to a new buildingA second profile at the new addressUpdate the existing profile's address; don't create a new one
You were acquired or renamedOld-name and new-name listings side by sideKeep one profile and update its name to your real-world signage
A staff member set up a profile years agoAn unverified or forgotten listingClaim it, or merge it into your verified profile
You created separate profiles for cremation or pre-planningProfiles for services, not businessesList services on your one profile instead

Separate locations are different. Each chapel or branch families can visit, with its own signage and staff, can have its own profile. That isn't a duplicate.

How do you find every listing for your funeral home?

  1. 1.Search Google Maps for your current name and town.
  2. 2.Search again for any previous names, including names before an acquisition.
  3. 3.Search your phone number, and any old numbers.
  4. 4.Search your current and previous addresses.

Note every listing that is really your funeral home, and whether you manage it.

How do you fix each kind of duplicate?

You created it and manage it. Remove it from your Google account. Google says this doesn't affect your verified listing, but removing a profile permanently deletes its content and managers, so check twice that you're removing the right one. Only a primary owner can do this.

It's on Maps and you don't manage it. Report it with “Suggest an edit” on Google Maps and request a merge. Google reviews every merge request. Merges work best when both listings have the same information, so make sure the name, address and phone match first.

Someone else owns the verified listing. Request ownership. Google gives the current owner 3 days to respond. If they don't, you may be offered the option to claim it.

Google has wrongly treated two real businesses as one. You can contact support to appeal. If both serve families at the same address, Google may ask for evidence of permanent signage showing both.

Will you lose your reviews?

When Google merges two profiles, it combines their reviews. Replies to those reviews can be lost, so keep a copy of any replies you want to post again. Removing a profile you created is different: posts, photos and review replies you added are deleted permanently, though reviews families left remain.

What to check afterwards

Once you're down to one listing, make sure your name, address and phone number are identical on your website and every directory, so the duplicate doesn't reappear. If your funeral home still isn't showing, why a funeral home isn't showing on Google Maps covers the other causes.

No. Keep the existing profile and update the name to match your new signage, so its reviews and history stay with your funeral home.

Request ownership. The current owner has 3 days to respond. If they deny it you can appeal, and if they don't respond you may be able to claim the profile.
