Why is my funeral home not showing up on Google Maps?

By Sean Munn, Founder, Sleepless Director · Updated

Quick answer

It's usually one of six things: the profile isn't verified, it has been suspended, it's new, a duplicate listing is splitting it, your category or details don't match what families search, or the family searching is closer to other funeral homes. Start by searching your funeral home's exact name. If you don't appear even then, it's a profile problem. If you appear for your name but not for “funeral home near me”, it's a ranking problem.

Is your funeral home missing, or just ranking low?

These are two different problems with different fixes, so check which one you have first.

  1. 1.Search your funeral home's exact name on Google Maps.
  2. 2.Then search what a family would type, such as “funeral home” plus your town.
  3. 3.Try both on a phone that isn't signed in to your business account, from a few places around your area.

If your name search finds nothing, work through the profile causes below. If your name search finds you but the general search doesn't, your profile exists but is being outranked: see why competitors rank above you. Remember that results depend on where the searcher is, so what you see from your office isn't what a family sees across town.

Is your Google Business Profile verified?

Verification tells Google you're authorized to represent the business. Google says a verified profile is more likely to show up in search results. An unverified profile may appear with limited information or not at all.

Sign in to the Google account that manages your profile and check its status. If it isn't verified, follow Google's verification steps. Google chooses the method, which can include a video recording of your location and signage.

Has your profile been suspended?

Google may suspend or disable profiles that don't follow its guidelines. A suspended profile won't appear to families, and the owner usually sees a notice when signed in.

Common reasons for a funeral home include extra words in the business name (“Smith Funeral Home – Cremation Services Dallas”), an address the business doesn't operate from, or more than one profile for the same location.

To get reinstated, fix the cause first, then submit an appeal through Google's Business Profile appeals tool. Google recommends adding evidence, such as your official business registration or a utility bill, with the name and address matching the profile. The evidence form must be submitted within 60 minutes of opening it. Why profiles get suspended and how to get reinstated cover both in full.

Is a duplicate listing splitting your profile?

Google's guidelines allow one profile per location. Duplicates often appear after a move, a change of ownership, a merger, or when someone creates a second profile without knowing the first exists. They can split your reviews and confuse Google about which listing to show.

Search Maps for your name, old names and your phone number. If you find a duplicate you control, remove it. If you don't control it, report it as a duplicate through “Suggest an edit” on Maps, or ask Google Business Profile support for help.

Do your category and details match what families search?

Google says businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up in local results, and that inaccurate information can stop a profile appearing for relevant searches in your area.

  • Make “Funeral home” your primary category, if that's what you are.
  • Add other categories only for services you really offer.
  • Fill in hours, phone, website and a description in your own words.
  • Add photos of your exterior and entrance so families recognize the building.

Is your address set up the way Google requires?

Your profile must be for your actual, real-world location. Google doesn't accept P.O. boxes, remote mailboxes or virtual offices. If you have several locations with their own staff, each gets its own profile; one location must never have two.

If you've recently moved, update the address on your existing profile rather than creating a new one, and then make sure your new address is the same everywhere else it appears online.

Is your profile new?

A new profile starts with no reviews and little recognition across the web, so it has little prominence, one of the three things Google weighs. It can exist and still rarely appear. Google doesn't publish a timeline for new profiles. Steady reviews, complete details and consistent listings are what build it over time.

Is the family simply closer to other funeral homes?

Distance is one of Google's three local factors, and it's the one you can't change. A family searching from the other side of town may see funeral homes nearer to them first, even if your profile is excellent. That isn't a fault in your profile; it's why relevance and prominence matter so much. How close a family has to be explains it in full.

A quick checklist

  1. 1.Search your exact name on Maps, signed out.
  2. 2.Check your profile is verified.
  3. 3.Check for a suspension notice, and appeal with evidence if there is one.
  4. 4.Search for duplicates under old names, old addresses and your phone number.
  5. 5.Confirm your business name has no added words.
  6. 6.Confirm your address is a real location you operate from.
  7. 7.Set “Funeral home” as your primary category and complete every detail.
  8. 8.Run the free Google Maps rank checker to see where families across your area can find you.

What if you've fixed it and it still doesn't show?

Recent edits can be under review by Google before they appear. If your profile is verified, not suspended, free of duplicates and complete, and it still doesn't show for your exact name, contact Google Business Profile support with your profile details.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my funeral home only show up when I search its exact name?

Your profile exists, but it's being outranked for general searches. Google weighs relevance, distance and prominence, so a funeral home closer to the searcher, with more complete details or more reviews, can appear ahead of you.

How long does it take a new funeral home to show on Google Maps?

Google doesn't publish a timeline. Once a profile is verified it can appear, but a new profile has few reviews and little recognition across the web, so it may rarely appear at first. Complete details and steady reviews build it over time.

Can a suspended funeral home profile be reinstated?

Yes. Fix what broke Google's guidelines, then submit an appeal through the Google Business Profile appeals tool, ideally with evidence such as your business registration or a utility bill that matches the profile's name and address.

Should I create a new Google profile if mine is suspended?

No. Google says not to create a new Business Profile for the same business while your appeal is under review.
