AI receptionist or answering service: which is right for a funeral home?

By Sean Munn, Founder, Sleepless Director · Providers' own pages checked September 29, 2026

Quick answer

A human answering service puts a trained receptionist on every call but costs more. Moneypenny's plans start from $132 a month. An AI receptionist answers instantly at any hour for less: Upfirst's plans start at $24.95 a month. Many now combine the two. For a funeral home the deciding questions are the same either way: does every at-need call reach a person, and are price questions handled properly?

What's the difference?

  • A human answering service routes your calls to receptionists who answer in your name, take details and pass messages or calls on.
  • An AI receptionist is software that answers your calls, handles routine questions, books appointments and transfers calls to your team.
  • Hybrids combine the two. Moneypenny offers an AI receptionist with the option to transfer to real people, alongside its human receptionists.

What matters most on an at-need call?

Whichever you choose, write down exactly what happens when a family calls because someone has just died, and test it. The call should reach a person quickly, the essential details should be taken once, and nothing should leave the family waiting on a voicemail. Ask any provider to show you, not tell you.

What about price questions?

The FTC's Funeral Rule requires funeral homes to give price information to people who ask by phone. Whoever answers your calls needs a clear rule for this: either accurate information from your price list, or a quick handover to someone who can give it. Sleepless Director always passes price questions to your team.

Should families know they're talking to an AI?

We think so. A family calling a funeral home deserves to know who they're speaking to. Sleepless Director's assistant introduces itself as the funeral home's virtual assistant on every call and never pretends to be a person. Our standards set this out.

Frequently asked questions

Is an AI receptionist appropriate for a funeral home?

It can be, with the right rules: it should say it's a virtual assistant, keep a calm pace, and pass every at-need call and price question to a person. Sleepless Director works this way.

How much does a funeral home answering service cost?

It varies by provider and call volume. On their own websites, Moneypenny's plans start from $132 a month and Upfirst's AI receptionist plans start at $24.95 a month.

Can an AI receptionist transfer at-need calls to our director?

Many can. Sleepless Director always transfers at-need calls live to your on-call director, and books the family an appointment with them if the director can't pick up.
