Why do families find my funeral home on Google Maps but not call?

By Sean Munn, Founder, Sleepless Director · Updated

Quick answer

It's usually one of three things. Families may be seeing your profile and choosing not to call, because of missing hours, few recent reviews or unconvincing photos. They may be calling in ways Google doesn't count, such as dialing by hand or from your website. Or they may be calling and not getting through. Your profile's Performance report and your phone log together tell you which.

Which of the three problems do you have?

What you seeLikely problemWhere to look
Many profile views, few calls, few website clicksFamilies see you and move onYour profile, next to the funeral homes around you
Many website clicks, few calls on GoogleFamilies research first, then call from your siteYour website's phone number and your phone log
Calls on Google, but fewer calls answeredFamilies call and don't get throughYour phone log, especially evenings and weekends
Few views at allA visibility problem, not a calling oneWhy a funeral home isn't showing

You'll find views, website clicks and calls in your profile's Performance report. Google counts Calls as taps on the call button on your profile, so it won't include families who dialed your number another way.

Why would a family see your profile and not call?

Look at your profile the way a family would, on a phone, next to the two or three funeral homes shown alongside yours:

  • The phone number is missing or wrong. Google needs a number on your profile to show a call button at all.
  • Your hours say “Closed”. A family calling at night may assume no one will answer. If your phone is answered around the clock, make sure your profile doesn't suggest otherwise.
  • Few or old reviews, or no replies. Google says replies to reviews show you value feedback and help you stand out.
  • Photos that don't show the building or rooms. Families want to recognize where they're going. See what photos a funeral home should have.
  • A thin description or no services listed. Families comparing homes look for signs you offer what they need, such as cremation or pre-planning.

Could families be calling in ways Google doesn't count?

Yes. Many families find you on Maps, then visit your website before they call, or write the number down and call later. None of those count as Calls in your Performance report. If website clicks are healthy, check your phone log before assuming the profile isn't working. How to see calls from Google Maps explains exactly what Google counts.

Could families be calling and not getting through?

This is the one most funeral homes miss, because it doesn't show up on Google at all. Compare Google's Calls figure with the answered and unanswered calls in your phone log for the same month. If unanswered calls cluster in the evening, at weekends or during services, the problem isn't your profile. It's that no one was free to pick up.

The missed call calculator turns your own numbers into a month and a year.

What should you fix first?

  1. 1.Check the phone number on your profile rings your funeral home, and is answered.
  2. 2.Make your hours accurate, including how families can reach you after the office closes.
  3. 3.Reply to recent reviews, and ask every family for one the same way.
  4. 4.Add real photos of the building, entrance and rooms.
  5. 5.Compare your phone log with Google's Calls figure every month.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my funeral home get Google profile views but no calls?

Families may be comparing you with nearby funeral homes and choosing another, calling from your website instead, which Google doesn't count as a call, or calling and not getting through. Your Performance report and phone log together tell you which.

Does Google count calls from our website?

No. Google's Calls metric counts taps on the call button on your Business Profile only.

Should our Google hours show us as open 24 hours?

Only if families can genuinely reach you at any hour. Google asks for accurate information, and families rely on it.
