Why does my funeral home only show up when I search its exact name?

Quick answer
If your funeral home appears when you search its name, your profile is live. It's just losing general searches like “funeral home” to other funeral homes nearby. For those searches Google compares every nearby profile on relevance, distance and prominence. The usual reasons you lose are a missing or wrong primary category, an incomplete profile, fewer reviews than nearby competitors, or families searching from farther away.
What does it mean if you only show up for your name?
It's better news than it feels. Your profile exists, is visible and isn't suspended. If you didn't appear even for your exact name, you'd have a different problem, covered in why a funeral home isn't showing on Google Maps.
A name search has one obvious answer. A search for “funeral home” or “cremation near me” has many, and Google has to choose between them. That's where you're being outranked.
How can you confirm it?
- 1.Open your profile's Performance report and look at Searches. It lists the search terms that showed your profile. If nearly all of them are your funeral home's name, families who don't already know you aren't finding you.
- 2.Run the free Google Maps rank checker for “funeral home”. It shows your position from 25 spots across your area, and which funeral homes appear first.
Together these tell you whether you're missing everywhere or only beyond your own neighborhood, which point to different fixes.
Is your primary category right?
This is the first thing to check. Categories are how Google decides which searches your profile matches. If your primary category is something other than “Funeral home”, you'll struggle to appear when a family searches for one.
Google asks businesses to use as few categories as possible, as specific as possible, and to pick ones that finish the sentence “This business IS a…”. Add a second category, such as a cremation service, only if it describes what you really are.
Is your profile complete?
Google says relevance comes from complete and detailed business information, and that businesses with complete, accurate information are more likely to show up in local results. Check your hours, phone, website, description, services and photos. Every empty field is a signal a competitor may be sending and you aren't.
Do nearby funeral homes have more reviews?
Prominence is how well known a business is. Google names reviews, ratings and links from other websites as part of it. Look at the funeral homes the rank checker shows first: their review totals, ratings and how recent their reviews are. Why competitors rank above you walks through the full comparison.
Are families searching from farther away?
Distance counts too. A family searching from across town will see closer funeral homes first, and you can't change that. It's why you might show for “funeral home” near your building but not further out. How close a family has to be explains it.
What shouldn't you do?
Don't add words like “Funeral Home & Cremation Near Me” to your business name to match more searches. Google says your name should be your real-world name and that unnecessary information isn't permitted. It can lead to suspension, which would remove you even from name searches.
What should you check first?
| Check | Where | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Which terms find you | Performance → Searches | Tells you how big the gap is |
| Where you rank across your area | The rank checker | Shows near vs far |
| Primary category | Your profile's business information | Set “Funeral home” as primary |
| Missing details | Hours, description, services, photos | Complete every field |
| Reviews vs nearby homes | The competitors shown first | Ask every family, steadily |

Why does my funeral home show up on Google for its name but not for “funeral home near me”?
Your profile is visible, but for general searches Google compares every nearby funeral home on relevance, distance and prominence. A missing primary category, an incomplete profile or fewer reviews than nearby competitors are the usual reasons you lose.
Should I add “funeral home” or my town to my business name?
No. Google says your business name should be your real-world name, and unnecessary information isn't permitted. Adding keywords can lead to suspension.
How do I see which searches my funeral home appears for?
Open your profile's Performance report while signed in and look at Searches. It lists the search terms that showed your profile, updated at the start of each month.
