How do I get my funeral home into the Google map pack?

By Sean Munn, Founder, Sleepless Director · Updated

Quick answer

The map pack is the short list of local results, shown with a map, near the top of Google Search. Google fills it on relevance, distance and prominence, and there's no way to pay for a place. To give your funeral home the best chance: verify your profile, set “Funeral home” as your primary category, complete every detail, add real photos, earn reviews steadily and reply to them, and keep your name, address and phone number identical everywhere.

What is the Google map pack?

When a family searches “funeral home” or “funeral homes near me” on Google, a small group of local results usually appears near the top with a map, above the ordinary web results. That's the map pack, sometimes called the local pack. Tapping “more places” opens the full list in Google Maps.

It matters because it's often the first thing a family sees, and each listing has a call button right there. A place in the pack is also a place near the top of Google Maps for the same search.

How does Google choose which funeral homes appear?

Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence, and there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.

  • Relevance: how well your profile matches the search. Complete, detailed information helps Google match you.
  • Distance: how far you are from the family searching. You can't change it.
  • Prominence: how well known you are. Google names reviews, ratings and links from other websites.

What order should you work in?

Each step builds on the one before, so the order matters. Fix what stops you appearing at all, then what stops you matching, then build what makes you stand out. The free profile scorecard checks all of it in five minutes:

  1. 1.Verify your profile. Google says verification makes a business more likely to show up in results.
  2. 2.Set your primary category to “Funeral home”. Categories decide which searches you match. Use as few as possible, and only ones that describe what you are.
  3. 3.Complete every detail. Hours, phone, website, description, services and attributes. Google says complete, accurate profiles are more likely to appear.
  4. 4.Add real photos. The building and sign, entrance, parking and the rooms families will use. What photos a funeral home should have has a full shot list.
  5. 5.Earn reviews steadily. Ask every family the same way, at a sensible time. Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help your ranking.
  6. 6.Reply to every review. Google says replies show you value feedback and help your business stand out.
  7. 7.Keep your details identical everywhere. Same name, address and phone on your website and every directory, so Google sees one consistent funeral home.

What doesn't work, or gets you removed?

TacticWhy to avoid it
Paying Google for a better positionGoogle says it isn't possible. Ads show separately, labeled as sponsored.
Keywords in your business nameNot permitted, and can lead to suspension.
More than one profile per locationGoogle's guidelines allow one profile per location.
Asking only happy families for reviewsAgainst Google's policies, and can break consumer-protection rules.
Categories for services you don't offerGoogle asks for categories that describe what the business is.

How do you check whether it's working?

Searching on your own phone shows you one view from one spot. The free Google Maps rank checker shows your position from 25 spots across your area, so you can see where you're in the top three and where you aren't, then run it again after making changes.

Your profile's Performance report shows the other half: whether calls, direction requests and website clicks rise over time. How to see calls from Google Maps explains what those numbers count.

How long does it take?

Google doesn't publish a timeline. Fixing something that stopped you appearing, such as verification or the wrong category, can show up once Google processes the change. Reviews and recognition across the web build gradually. And families searching from much farther away may still see closer funeral homes first, whatever you do.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay to get my funeral home into the Google map pack?

No. Google says there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Google Ads can appear alongside local results, but they're labeled as sponsored and don't change your unpaid position.

How many funeral homes appear in the map pack?

Usually a small group, often three, with a link to see more places in Google Maps. Which funeral homes appear changes with where the family is searching from.

What's the most important thing for ranking in the map pack?

There's no single factor. Google weighs relevance, distance and prominence together. For most funeral homes the fastest wins are a verified profile, “Funeral home” as the primary category and a complete profile.
