What are the best Google Business Profile categories for a funeral home?

By Sean Munn, Founder, Sleepless Director · Updated

Quick answer

For most funeral homes the primary category should be “Funeral home”. Add an additional category only for another kind of business you genuinely are at that location, such as a cremation service or a cemetery you operate on site, and keep the list short. Google says categories affect your local ranking, asks for as few as possible, and may ask you to verify again after you change them.

Why does the category matter so much?

Your category tells Google what kind of business you are, and so which searches you can appear for. Google says the categories you select affect your local ranking on Google. A funeral home with the wrong primary category can be perfectly visible for its own name and still missing when a family searches “funeral home near me”.

What should a funeral home's primary category be?

If you're a funeral home, choose “Funeral home” as your primary category. Google asks you to pick the most specific category that describes your main business, from its own list. You can't create your own.

A useful test from Google's guidelines: the category should complete the sentence “This business IS a…”, not “This business HAS a…”.

Which categories fit your kind of funeral business?

If you are…Primary categoryAdditional categories
A funeral homeFuneral homeUsually none needed
A funeral home that also offers cremationFuneral homeA cremation category, if cremation is a real part of what you do at that location
A cremation-only providerThe cremation category that fits bestOnly others that describe what you are
A funeral home and cemetery run together on one siteWhichever is your main businessThe other one
A cemetery run as a separate business nearbyIts own profile, with its own categoryDon't add it to the funeral home's profile

To see the exact options, start typing into the category box, such as “crem” or “cemet”, and choose from the list Google shows. Pick a general category only if the specific one you need isn't there.

What should a funeral home avoid?

  • A category for every service. Pre-planning, memorial services or monument sales aren't separate businesses. Google says not to select a category for every product or service. List them as services instead.
  • Categories as keywords. Google says not to use categories solely as keywords or to describe features of your business.
  • Categories for a separately run business. If a florist, cemetery or crematory at or near your location is operated independently, it should have its own profile. Don't add its category to yours.
  • Changing categories casually. Editing your categories can prompt Google to ask you to verify your business again.

How do you change your categories?

  1. 1.Sign in and go to your Business Profile.
  2. 2.Select Edit profile.
  3. 3.Next to “Business category”, select Edit.
  4. 4.In Primary category, type and choose a category from the list.
  5. 5.To add another, select Add another category. To remove one, select Remove next to it.
  6. 6.Select Save.

Google reviews edits before they go live. Plan category changes for a quiet week, in case you're asked to verify again.

What to do after setting your categories

Categories get you into the right searches. Where you appear among the other funeral homes then comes down to the rest of your profile, your reviews and distance. How to get into the map pack puts the next steps in order, and the Google Maps rank checker shows the result across your area.

Frequently asked questions

Should a funeral home add “cremation” as a category?

Only if cremation is a genuine part of what your business is at that location. Keep “Funeral home” as the primary category and add the cremation category Google offers as an additional one.

How many categories should a funeral home have?

As few as possible. Google asks businesses to use the fewest categories that describe the core business. For many funeral homes that's one.

Will changing my funeral home's category affect my ranking?

It can. Google says categories affect local ranking, and editing them can prompt Google to ask you to verify your business again.

Can I create my own category, like “Funeral home and pre-planning”?

No. You have to choose from Google's list. List services such as pre-planning in your profile's services instead.
